The government remains committed to the 1.5million new homes target

While accepting that the target will be difficult to achieve, Angela Rayner said that the target remained in place as she returned to the role of Housing Secretary.  Speaking to Radio 4's Today programme on 24th July, Ms Rayner attributed the decline in delivery in 2025/26 to a lag from the previous (Conservative) government, together with the impact of higher costs due to the conflict in the Middle East.
