Mayors in England will receive a share of income tax revenues and more control over housing

Mayors will be "equipped to support the building of council homes, including through greater devolution of the Social and Affordable Homes Programme and investment to upgrade to warmer homes".  A statement from the Cabinet, published on 31st July also said that the framework for public development corporations to drive local housing and infrastructure development would be strengthened.

As part of the “biggest transfer of power from Westminster in a generation”, mayors will keep a share of the income tax generated in their area of 2028.  On 30th July, the Prime Minister announced that Mayors would also begin retaining a greater share of business rates revenues from April 2027.  This will increase the rewards retained in the areas when places create jobs and grow their economies.  Stronger planning and regeneration powers will be devolved to mayors, assisting them to build more homes where they are needed and to unlock stalled developments.
