There is concern about the impact of local government reorganisation on housing services

There are particular worries about the continuity of allocations, temporary accommodation and homelessness services.  According to a report published by the CIH on 30th July, 53% of respondents to a recent survey rated their concern about housing service continuity during the reorganisation process at eight out of ten or higher.   The professional body called on the government to provide a clear, housing-specific timeline for reorganisation, issue a checklist of all statutory services that should be in place on vesting day, ensuring that local authorities have adequate staffing and resources to support reorganisation, and provide specific technical guidance on the merging of Housing Revenue Accounts (HRAs) and creation of new allocations registers.  On 16th July, the government had announced that across 14 geographical areas, 133 local authorities will be reorganised into 38 new unitary councils with the formal change planned to take place on 1st April 2028.
