The number of homes being turned into holiday lets is putting pressure on housing supply in Wales

An estimated 1,345 permanent homes have been lost to holiday lets across the country since 2022.  In a report published on 7th August, the Bevan Foundation highlighted that between 21,300 and 25,300 homes in Wales were being used for holiday lets or for second homes, enough to rehouse every household housed in temporary accommodation three times over.  It called on the Welsh Government to introduce a national requirement for planning permission for change of use from a permanent home to holiday accommodation and for the funds raised through Council Tax premiums on holiday accommodation to be ringfenced for use in the area to provide housing services and boost the supply of affordable homes.
