There is an increasing risk to properties in urban areas from wildfires

A long term strategy and sustained investment is needed to ensure that fire and rescue services have the capacity to tackle uncontrolled blazes.  According to a statement from the National Fire Chief's Council on 13th August, 25 major incidents linked to extreme heat and wildfires had been declared across the UK in 2026 including nine on that day alone.  The statement warned that wildfires were increasingly threatening homes, businesses and critical infrastructure as they move from open land into urban and suburban communities.
