The cost of housing in London has become a key political and electoral issue

The Labour Party has lost support in the capital due to the lack of a clear policy on how to reduce these costs.  Zoë Garbett, who was elected as Mayor of Hackney for The Green Party in May, made housing central to her campaign, citing it as the number one issue in council surgeries and on the doorstep.  In July, Sem Moema, a Labour member of the London Assembly told the Fabian Society’s Housing Summit that she would continue to raise rent control in discussions around housing policy due to the impact of housing costs on support for her Party.
