Almost all of the private rented sector is unaffordable to benefit claimants

Less than 2% of private rental properties advertised across Britain are affordable to households receiving housing benefit.  According to research by Crisis and Citizens Advice, published on 6^th July, the proportion of properties covered by the Local Housing Allowance (LHA) fell from 2.7% in 2024/25 to 1.9% in 2025/26.   It found that the average gap between the LHA and the cheapest 30% of two-bedroom homes in England was £419 per month.
