The welfare savings from capping private sector rents “could support more social housing”

A freeze in private rents at 2024 levels would save the government at least £2billion a year in housing benefit expenditure, while saving the average renting household £1,300 per year.  A report from the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose and the New Economics Foundation found that this change would make only 2.3% of private landlords unprofitable.  These proposals have support from the Green Party, whose Leader, Zach Polanski, spoke at the launch of the report on 10^th July.
